. . . And Proud of It!
The slowly growing popularity of earth homes as an alternative housing option – also known as earth-sheltered homes – is fanned by the rising awareness of being environmentally responsible, the benefits of using natural materials and sustainable practices in the use of our natural resources. The escalating prices of real estate and building construction are also driving people to rethink their options as regards building their own homes. We all agree on the advantages and benefits over traditional design and construction. So, we gathered 5 earth homes that we feel best represent the genre – or what we expect earth-sheltered homes to look like. There are earth homes that are indeed earth homes by construction and use of materials, but unfortunately, do not look anything like earth homes at all. We definitely would prefer earth homes to retain that distinctive look and ‘trademark’. Like any other style, it has great potential in the looks department. So here are five of the many good-looking earth sheltered structures that are not afraid nor ashamed to announce to the world that they are dyed-in-the-wool, honest-to-goodness earth homes. Now take a look at these photos and tell us what you think on our Facebook Page!
The earth sheltered home uses the ground as insulating blanket which effectively protects it from temperature extremes, wind, rain and extreme weather events. An earth sheltered home is energy-efficient, quiet, freeze-proof and low maintenance. Aesthetically an earth sheltered home blends in with the natural environment, leaving more yard space and more space for wildlife.
