Back Country House Inspired by New Zealand Huts

Easy Breezy Family Retreat

Traditional huts in New Zealand are simple shelters. They are used as a place to stay and recover when one is out exploring the local parks and reserves. David Maurice of LTD Architectural has been inspired by this concept and adapted it to his own family house.

The amazing living space on the ground floor opens up on both sides, providing a seamless integration to the outdoor living space. You can build a fire by the deck for chilly winter nights or relax with a glass of wine by the sunken outdoor bathtubs in the summertime.

Aiming at simplicity it is comprised of a single volume for living/cooking/ eating and a lean-to annex housing the lower floor service/sleeping areas. The spaces are open and shared as opposed to enclosed and separate. The experience is one of enhanced connection with each other, and of an enhanced connection to the surrounding environment.
