A Refreshing Way to Embrace the Vernacular

OFIS Architects have converted an old hay barn in Slovenia into a gorgeous living space. The barn was originally used to house cattle on the first floor and store hay on the upper level, but had been left empty for years.

To pay tribute to the historicity of the barn, much of the building’s original structure is retained, and its external timber cladding and concrete roof slates were reused with a contemporary twist in the new extension. The ramp that used to lead cattle into the barn was also kept and now serves as the main entrance to the new loft apartment

The newly revamped space consists of an open living and dining room, a kitchen, bathroom, a raised bedroom, a sauna and a fireplace. There is also a guest bedroom on the loft overlooking the main living space. The modern interior is light filled with plenty of windows and covered in light-coloured spruce panels, complementing harmoniously with the rustic charm of the existing old barn.
