A Beautiful Solution from Lachlan Shepherd Architects
Lachlan Shepherd Architects designed this highly durable and low-maintenance home for a young family in Mt Dundeen, just south of Geelong, Victoria, so that their weekends are better spent for relaxation and quality time with the family.
Clad in rusting steel and recycled timber, the home’s grey and orange tones make it feel like a forgotten relic on the hill. But the use of these hard-wearing and unfinished products ensures the home requires no upkeep. Inside, the materials are similarly hard-wearing. Galvanised steel beams form the main structure of the home. Polished concrete floors mean the kids can ride their bikes and scooters inside or out, without even making a dent.
More than a low-maintenance home, it is also energy saving and provides a cosy and comfortable living space. Taking full advantage of its locality atop a gentle hill, the single storey house is designed to be open as much as practicable; almost entire perimeter of the house is lined with sliding glass doors that can be fully opened, maximising natural airflow, abundance of daylight and wondrous views of the surrounding landscape.
In spite of practicalities at the core of its design, this modern home fully encompasses beauty in simplicity and exhibit an authentic charm of its own.
