THIS HOUSING PROJECT SHOWS HOW YOU CAN BUILD A COZY HOME WITHOUT SHUTTING OUT THE BEAUTIES OF NATURE
The Roofless House is a design showing how you can blend your indoors with the outdoors. The owner wanted to make the tall beautiful trees become the focus of attention.
Large glass windows and walls maximize the feeling of openness of the home. Retractable sliding doors only add to the ease of transitioning between the inside and the outside of the home. The central courtyard is open to the sky and the canopy of surrounding trees. No matter where you go in this home, there will always be a little bit of nature the follows.
The climate is temperate, almost Mediterranean and the owner of this house wanted a home where she could live outdoors as much as possible. Complicating this desire was that the lot is long and narrow and her view on all sides was of the backs of the neighboring houses which (like most typical suburban houses) are huge and blank. Focusing on this view up rather than horizontally out, Craig Steely has created a seemingly roofless house that surrounds the living spaces by huge outdoor courtyards that direct the view up.
