SUSTAINABLE MOUNTAIN HUT IN THE HIGH TATRAS

Fancy Staying in a Unique Futuristic Structure Like This?

This ice-cube structure designed by Atelier 8000 for the Kežmarská Chata (Kežmarská Hut) international competition was inspired by a glacier rolling down the mountain. Its location would be at the High Tatras, in the snowy mountains of Northern Slovakia. The interesting 5-level structure is powered by solar and is made of glass and photovoltaic panels. The sharp shapes and panels against the snowy landscape definitely makes it visible from all angles. The structure has a sleeping quarters, restaurant, ski storage, and snowmobile parking.

The interior’s slanted ceilings may be disorienting at first.. but they look unique and cozy. We would love to try staying in an ice cube structure like this! It will certainly make for a unique experience.

At its base, the hut provides a snowmobile garage, staff entrance, ski storage, drying room and restrooms. The ground floor is made up of a restaurant and deck, while the upper floors accommodate sleeping and emergency recovery areas.

In terms of its energy generation and consumption the hut has been developed as a passive building. The shape and orientation of the hut maximize solar energy, while parts of the facade with energy generation units are oriented southwards and eastwards to face the sunrays directly.
