5 Things To Know For Those Who Believe Tiny Houses Are Too Expensive

Don’t Believe Everything You Hear or See

Some tiny houses may come with a price tag and that could be surprising to you, especially when you originally expect the prices to be incredibly low due to the small size.  Yet, while the fancy tiny houses you read about online are often out of your budget, don’t be fooled into thinking that you can’t afford to have one.  Here’s a list by Steven Harrell of Tiny House Listings that will help set the record straight:

1.) Many of the tiny houses you see listed on Tiny House Listings, or on the websites of Tiny House Builders have already been pre-planned and pre-designed with specific features, sizes and bells and whistles. This means that if you think that a particular tiny house is too expensive, it may have features that you either don’t need or can’t afford, but can be customized to fit your budget.

2.) Most tiny house builders are willing to work with your budget (pending that it’s reasonable). This means that if you go to them (I’m not saying all of them, but at least some) with your budget and what features you’d like in your tiny house, there’s a good chance you’ll find a builder that’s a match for you.

3.) Just because a tiny house has a particular pricetag, doesn’t mean the builder/owner is going to get that amount. They may be riding the tiny house wave and have delusional dreams that their home is worth more than it is. Just like with typical real estate, the market determines the price, not the owner.

4.) If all else fails, you can always build a tiny house yourself. In actuality, there are very few reasons you can’t do it, only excuses. Vera Struck, a 65 year old cancer survivor recently completed her Silver Bullet Tiny House. Rob Dunn is a college student in Vermont that is living in his $3,000 tiny house he built last year to save money and live simply.

5.) Remember, renting a home or living in a house that carries a 30-year mortgage is pretty darn expensive. Between taxes, repairs, utility costs and interest paid, you’re looking at a pretty big chunk of the income of most people with average means.
