JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED

APPRECIATE THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE COTTAGES AS YOU ENJOY THEIR “CURATIVE” EFFECTS TO ONE’S BODY AND MIND
Back when tuberculosis was rampant, these cottages were built for the purpose of treating people with the disease. They were meant as places where patients can stay for a change of climate. They’re also cozier substitutes for the more intimidating medical institutions of the time.
Located around Saranac Lake, New York each cottage was made with the patients in mind. An emphasis on comfort and intimacy provides a sort of safe haven where patients can focus on recovering. After those dark times, the cottages reverted back to their more traditional use as housing. The most common trait each cottage has with each other is the presence of a spacious wrap-around porch. Here, people can rest on special loungers and recliners.
One thing’s for sure, these cottages helped proved that a change in location, climate, and approach to relaxation can help people rejuvenate. Whether it’s recovering from a disease, or simply having some much-needed rest and relaxation.
You’ll see them all around Saranac Lake, New York: Victorian-style homes with long wrap-around porches and balconies. These are the Saranac Lake “cure cottages,” and for several decades in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they were where you came to get “cured” of tuberculosis.
