Old Dairy Barn Turned Fancy Home

A Lovely Remodel Project Well Done

This simple old-school style barn, white with a black roof, stands in Bainbridge Island, WA.  Since it’s an original working barn that’s over a century old, it displays real rustic elements; and yet now that it’s been remodeled into a beautiful home, it displays simple modern touches of convenience and elegance.  Take a look through these photos and tell us what you think on our facebook page!

Built 104 years ago by the Grandy family, this working barn was converted into a comfortable home that retains the integrity and nostalgia of the original structure, including open roof framing, hay door, trolley, and counter weights.  Rolling barn doors serve as shutters to two bedrooms. One original wall shows a penciled shopping list that includes 2,100 pounds of seeds. Originally pasture land and an old fruit orchard, the community was master planned with Greenbelt and open park space to create a peaceful rural neighborhood. Don Frothingham, a Seattle architect, thoughtfully remodeled and converted the barn to a home. He strengthened the roof with metal tie rods and added a new layer of roof above the barn’s traditional gambrel roof, filling the space with thick and rigid insulation.
