| An All-Embracing Solution that Combines Beauty and Functionality
As the family’s three teenagers were growing up quickly this family needed an extra bedroom and a study. On the narrow urban block with a heritage overlay there weren’t many places to put an addition except above the living area. The problem was the living area had a beautiful (and functional) roof lantern that would be a shame to remove.
With a few brilliant gestures, Drawing room architecture resolved the challenge and created a superbly stunning new addition to the traditional home.
- By lifting the bedroom a foot higher than the study, they were able to sufficiently fit the additional space while still retaining the lantern’s light into the living area. On top of it, the split level created extra privacy for the bedroom and a better view to the outdoor green.
- The enclosing walls were then sloped to prevent overshadowing in the neighbor’s yard. The circular screen cleverly serves as a privacy protection while allowing abundant day-lighting in the bedroom.
- The study is also designed as a flexible and open space to accommodate for different use as the need arises, with custom made in-built furniture to create more storage space within the tight space.
- Finally, the interior is kept simple and clean with the use of white walls coupled with black and birch finished plywood, which makes it feel brighter and more spacious.
The overall result is a remarkably livable and comfortable space that is also interesting and beautiful.
